Today I taught a class where we learned many particles like “wa”, “wo”, “de”, “he”, “ni” and so on.
Particles in Japanese are very important, but sometimes they can be confusing.
So let me explain “wo” today.
“wo” is know as “object particle”.
Let’s say you want to say “I eat cookies”.
“I” is called “subject”, “eat” is “verb” and “cookies” is “object”.
I | eat | cookies |
subject | verb | object |
In Japanese, the word “I” is “watashi”, “eat” is “tabemasu”, and “cookies” is “kukki-“.
English | Japanese |
I | watashi |
eat | tabemasu (masu-form) |
cookies | kukki- |
Let’s say “I eat cookies” in Japanese!
That would be “watashi wa kukki- wo tabemasu.”
SUBJECT | OBJECT | VERB | ||
watashi | wa | kukki- | wo | tabemasu |
I | cookies | eat |
“wa” is called “subject particle”. This comes after the subject.
In this case, the subject is “watashi” and “wa” comes after “watashi”.
“wo” is called “object particle”. This comes after the objecy.
In this case, the object is “kukki-” and “wo” comes after “kukki-“
Let me share some vocabulary.
English | Japanese |
fish | sakana |
vegetable | yasai |
fruit | kudamono |
egg | tamago |
